Poisoning
Overview
Injury caused by poisoning occurs when an individual inhales, ingests, injects or touches substances such as chemicals, alcohol, drugs, or other materials.

Statistics
- Falls are the leading cause of death through injury in Atlantic Canada, followed by suicide/self-harm, transport incidents, and unintentional poisoning.
- Compared to the other Atlantic Provinces, Nova Scotia had the highest cost per capita due to unintentional poisonings for those aged 25-64 years old ($49.24).
- Compared to the other Atlantic Provinces, Nova Scotia had the highest cost per capita due to unintentional poisonings for those aged 0-14 years old ($8.82).
- Compared to the other Atlantic Provinces, Nova Scotia had the highest cost per capita due to unintentional poisonings for those aged 65 years and older ($12.59).
- For adults throughout all Atlantic provinces aged 65 years and over unintentional poisoning was the third leading cause of injury.
